Though men started many of the top business fraternities, Phi Gamma Nu is one of the only fraternities that started as an organization by and for women. Members often come together to discuss ideas for creating their own companies and to talk about advances in the entrepreneurship field. There are now nine chapters in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Michigan, California and New Jersey. Alpha Kappa Psi created its own foundation as a way to give back to those in need and allows both alumni and current students to volunteer their time. The fraternity encourages students to connect with each other via its main website, which also sells clothing and merchandise for members. There are branches in the United States and in other countries, including Canada and the United Kingdom too. According to its official website, it has chapters on more than 200 college campuses and has a membership of more than 200,000 current and former students. In this episode from the well-loved Chinese epic adventure, Journey to the West, Master Tang San Zang and his disciples encounter the White Bone Fiend in their travels. Introduction to The Journey West: White Bone Fiend story Making a puppet with a movable mouth and eyes would require a week’s work. The handcrafting process was complicated and subjected to weather conditions. The creation of a puppet was either a ten or twelve-step process, depending on whether there was a need to craft movable eyes and mouths. Puppets also had facial features and limbs that were more human-like. By then, the puppets were as tall as 90cm with movable mouths and eyes. Bigger puppets were created so that they could be visible from a distance during outdoor performances and eventually television shows. Larger puppets of approximately 45cm in height were used. During the era of glove-puppetry, puppet shows were performed in temples or on a temporary stage in an open space. The puppet could be manipulated and held by one hand. The first used traditional hand-puppets which were the smallest in size at just more than 20cm in height. For more than 140 years, there have been three types of Taiwanese puppet shows. Nowadays, there are specialists who style and design clothes for puppets. In the early history of puppetry culture, puppets were designed before their clothes. He felt that puppet culture in Singapore had evolved over many years and developed a distinctive style and format. Mr Hsu also pointed out that much innovation could be seen in Singapore’s puppet shows, which was very different from Taiwanese puppet shows. Armed with 30 years of puppet-making experience, Mr Hsu has been seeking breakthroughs in puppet-making, such as incorporating anime and comic elements in hand-puppets for a more refined look.ĭifferences in puppetry performances in Singapore and Taiwan The puppet’s cold and peculiar demeanour was specially designed and sculpted by him. Hand-puppets crafted by Mr Hsu appeared in the well-received Taiwanese film Detention. Puppet maker also created puppets for Taiwanese hit film Detention This is the first performance co-presented by Paper Monkey and Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre, under the auspices of the Memorandum of Understanding signed in February 2022 to deepen ties and develop new programmes to promote Chinese Singaporean arts and culture. The key characters, Sun Wu Kong and White Bone Fiend were played by actors who performed man-to-man fighting scenes as well as man-to-puppet battling scenes. When The Journey West: White Bone Fiend was first staged in 20, the performances showcased several types of puppetry, such as hand-puppetry, rod-puppetry and shadow-puppetry. Mr Hsu first came to know of Paper Monkey Theatre at an international puppetry festival in Yunlin county, Taiwan, and later was engaged as the Puppet Designer and Maker of Paper Monkey Theatre’s productions that involved traditional Chinese hand puppets and Pili puppets. Exquisitely made at great cost with life-like features, these puppets are also highly valued by collectors.Ī second-generation puppet maker, Mr Hsu started to learn the art of puppet-making whilst he was in secondary school. The performance will feature 30 traditional Chinese hand-puppets and pili puppets handcrafted by the well-known second-generation Taiwanese puppet-maker, Mr Hsu Chien-Jhang. Another innovation will be the inclusion of percussion on the left side of the stage, breaking away from the conventional staging of puppet shows. Opening on Mid-Autumn Festival, the show is the perfect occasion for children to learn more about our unique Chinese Singaporean culture.ĭirected by artistic director, Benjamin Ho, the restaged work will see a new script and new puppets. Singapore, 2 August 2022 – After 12 years, Paper Monkey provides a fresh take in its latest restaging of the classic epic tale The Journey West: White Bone Fiend. Restaged Puppet Show The Journey West: White Bone Fiend Re-Interprets Classic Chinese Epic Myth In fact, the score shows quite a few ‘Eastern’ influences, without actually sounding Eastern. “Calling Out” offers a secondary piano theme (similar, but different to the first), and also introduces an Indian flute – a wonderful, fitting sound that is to return several times throughout the score. There are quite a few of them here – tracks that are just perfect all on their own. “Naru, Embracing the Light” is a playful, and at times soaring, cue for piano and flute that really opens this score up and is one of many tracks that feel like complete entities in their own right. It’s reprised numerous times, in all sort of variations, throughout the score. It’s a lovely melody, in a ‘gentle pop song’ sort of a way. Opening with “Ori Lost in the Storm”, Coker present his main theme on piano, accompanied by Aeralie Brighton’s atmospheric wordless vocals. Flutes and wordless vocals often take the lead but one of the most prevailing instruments here is the piano (…and that’s alongside a full-sized orchestra). There is a strong presence from light metallic mallets, providing a shimmering atmosphere, as well as wooden mallets for that earthy sound. One of the first things that spring to mind about “Ori and the Blind Forest” is how light and airy and how colourful it is. We tried to create memorable characters in an atmospheric world and to craft a story that players will truly care about! The soundtrack is by British composer Gareth Coker featuring solo artists Aeralie Brighton, Rachel Mellis, and Tom Boyd, and performed by the Nashville Music Scoring Orchestra. The player is put into the role of a forest spirit, who – over the course of his journey – has to find out more about his role within the world he’s living in. In the words of developers Moon Studios: Ori is a bit of a coming-of-age story. WINNER– 2015 Synchrotones’ Soundtrack Awards “Ori and the Blind Forest” is a great example. One potential downside of JVs is that they can create ethical and compliance risks, particularly for government contractors. By applying for contracts via JVs, you give yourself higher chances of success because the officials will consider past performance for both companies, instead of just one.ĭespite all the benefits of JVs, they, like most things in life, are not perfect. The GSA also maintains a database of contractor performance information, which is available to government officials when they are considering awarding a contract.īy reviewing this information, officials can make sure that they are selecting a contractor who is likely to complete the project successfully and provide value for the taxpayers’ money. The Small Business Administration (SBA) and the General Services Administration (GSA) are two of the agencies that oversee government contracting, with the SBA requiring contractors to submit information about their past performance on similar projects, as well as any relevant customer satisfaction data. This information can be used by the government to evaluate the contractor’s capabilities and to determine whether they are likely to be successful on the project. Government contractors are often required to submit information about their past performance as part of the bidding process. In addition, government contracting companies typically have established relationships with key decision-makers within the government, which can give your company an advantage when bidding on contracts. The process of bidding on and winning government contracts can be time-consuming, so working with a government contracting company can free up valuable time for your company to focus on other aspects of your business. A good government contracting company will have a database of contacts, potential clients, and projects that you can leverage, making it easier to find the right opportunity for your business.Īnother benefit of using a government contracting company is that they can help you save time and money.
